Who was it who famously said, ‘We always have a choice’?

Choices are not always evident, nor are they always palatable; and sometimes we feel like we are left with no choice. But beloved, did you know that in actual fact, we always have a choice?

You see, even if we are like Daniel; choosing between bending to royal decree or be thrown into the lion’s den; or like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego; choosing between bending the knee to the royal god or be thrown into the furnace; we always have a choice. It’s just a matter of whether we have the guts to make the right choice.

Now, making the right choice is a whole different ball game. Because in order to make the right choice, you need faith; faith to know that you didn’t make the wrong judgement call, faith to know that you didn’t read the situation wrong, but most of all, faith to know that the one in whom which you placed your faith, will not let you down.

So when you are given this choice to make,

“And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15

You will need to know if the Lord will come through for you when the going get tough, right? So will He?

At the time when Joshua issued this challenge to the people, Israel had been brought out of Egypt and into Canaan, the promised land. They had been winning battles under Joshua’s leadership and had driven out most of the original inhabitants. So every sense of the word, God had fulfilled this promised He made through Moses.

“I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows. So I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites.” Exodus 3:7-8

And now they were getting distracted by the gods of the peoples whom they let settle on their land, the very ones whom God had told them to drive out but they did not. Am I the only one who sees a problem with this situation?

Our Father had track record; yet the people chose to get distracted by those ‘gods’ they had barely ‘met’. Strange, is it not?

Now in the case of Daniel, when he was wrongly accused by his peers who were jealous of his favor with the king and his quick rise to power, he chose to put his faith in God and not bend to the king’s decree. And what happened?

“…My God sent His angel and shut the lions’ mouths, so that they have not hurt me, because I was found innocent before Him; and also, O king, I have done no wrong before you.” Daniel 6:21-22

And what about Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego? These guys were commanded to bend the knee to Nebuchadnezzar’s god or be thrown into the furnace. Yet, they chose to put their faith in God’s protection. And what happened?

“Then King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished; and he rose in haste and spoke, saying to his counselors, “Did we not cast three men bound into the midst of the fire?”
They answered and said to the king, “True, O king.”
“Look!” he answered, “I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire; and they are not hurt, and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.”” Daniel 3:24-25
Our Father didn’t abandon them, did He?

You know beloved, we always think that we are the ones that need to make the choice when it comes to faith. We think that God is somewhere far away, waiting for us to go to Him. But how wrong we are. For you see, the reality is,

“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him;” John 6:44

The reason why we even have a choice is because our Father chose us first. He chose to create us, He chose to put us first amongst all of creation and give us charge over all which He has created.

“Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” Genesis 1:26

And when we made a mess of the world that He gave us, He decided that He loved us too much to let us pay the price for our sins, and so He chose to lay “on Him the iniquity of us all.” Isaiah 53:6

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” John 3:16-17

And that is the reason why the Psalmist says,

“My choice is you, God, first and only.
And now I find I’m your choice!
You set me up with a house and yard.
And then you made me your heir!” Psalm 16:5-6 [MSG]

The truth is, our Father has chosen us right from the start, and has set us up with every good thing that we will ever need, for this life and the next.

Yet, despite all that He has done for us, He still gives us a choice to believe in Him or not. Doesn’t that just blow your mind?

And the fact that you are reading this right now is no accident. He has chosen you and purposed that things fall in place in such a way that you are reading this right here, right now.

Now, I am not asking you to trust the words of a man you hardly know. Nor am I asking you to trust in a book that was written so long ago. I am asking you to search your heart and seek counsel from your conscience. Could you have come this far on your own steam? Was it you who made all the right choices throughout your life that led you to where you are today? No mistakes?

So then, how could you have circumvented the consequences, if not for His provision?

Make no mistake, He has chosen you. All that’s left is for you to choose Him. And if you have never made a conscious decision to accept our Father’s love; if you have never made a conscious decision to put your trust in the saving grace of Jesus; and would like to right now, then say this to Him.

“Father, thank You for choosing me. Thank You for making me Your choice, even before I knew enough to make You mine. Thank You for choosing to put me in the right place at the right time all throughout my life. And thank You for choosing to make Jesus take my place for all my sins. I know that I could never have made it to heaven if not for the blood of Christ, which gives me full and complete remission of all my sins. I know that I could never be righteous in Your sight, if not for Jesus’ sacrifice. So I am making a conscious decision right now to receive all that You have in store for me, for I know that in all circumstances, You will always come through for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Beloved child of God, we indeed will always have a choice, no matter what the circumstances are. And we can have the faith to know that our faith in Jesus will never be in vain. So when you have a tough decision to make, always choose to stand on the side of our Father, for He is always standing on your side.
