YOU ARE WHAT YOU KNOW

,
YOU ARE WHAT YOU KNOW

In life, there are many things that you just know. As Agent K said, “1,500 years ago, everybody knew that the Earth was the center of the universe. 500 years ago, everybody knew that the Earth was flat. And 15 minutes ago, you knew that humans were alone on this planet.”

Well, you still do.

But what you know is important because what you know shapes how you see things and determines how you respond to things. What you know will tell you where you can go for help and who you can turn to when things get rough. I mean, think about it; who would you go to when the chips are down? What do you know about them? Conversely, who wouldn’t you touch with a ten foot pole? What do you know about them?

So similarly, what we know about our Father and Jesus is just as, if not, even more, important. Because if you ‘know’ that they are out to get you, if you ‘know’ that they don’t love you, if you ‘know’ that they are looking for the next opportunity to catch you when you trip up, then you would be denying yourself the love of our Father and making life unnecessarily hard for yourself. Let us see why.

In Paul’s letter to the believers in Colosse, he said this of them.

“I want you to know by this letter that we here are constantly praying for you, and whenever we do we thank God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ because you believe in Christ Jesus and because you are showing true Christian love towards other Christians. We know that you are showing these qualities because you have grasped the hope reserved for you in Heaven—that hope which first became yours when the truth was brought to you.” Colossians 1:3-5 [PHILLIPS]

Here was a people who believed in Jesus and were showing true Christian love towards other Christians. Now, how did Paul know that they believed in Jesus? Yes, because their actions on the outside showed what was hidden in their hearts. And this, beloved child of God, is why it is important to know the right thing; because what you know on the inside, will influence how you act on the outside.

In fact, so great was their actions a testimony of their faith that The Amplified translates their belief as

“…[the leaning of your entire human personality on Him in absolute trust and confidence in His power, wisdom, and goodness]…” Colossians 1:4 [AMPC]

It was as if Paul could see, through their actions, that their entire personality was based on and built upon a confidence in Jesus’ power, wisdom and goodness. But why was it that they could have such faith in Christ?

“…because you have grasped the hope reserved for you in Heaven—that hope which first became yours when the truth was brought to you.” Colossians 1:5 [PHILLIPS]

Beloved, did you know that there is a hope reserved for you in Heaven? Did you know that

“Because of the hope [of experiencing what is] laid up (reserved and waiting) for you in heaven.” Colossians 1:5 [AMPC]

You too can have faith in Christ? For our hope is not in something that is yet to come, it is already here, laid up, reserved and waiting for you in heaven.

Think about it. If you know that there will be a paycheck coming at the end of the month, you will be free to spend within the means that it gives you. If you know that the bus you are on will get you to your destination, you will be free to enjoy a relaxing bus ride. If you know that the medication that your doctor gave you will bring about a full and complete recovery, you will be free to enjoy the rest away from work that your doctor has given you. So WHEN you know that you have treasure laid up, reserved and waiting for you in heaven, you be free to love and bless other believers because you know that there is plenty more where that came from.

But how do we even begin to know this truth?

“We are asking God that you may see things, as it were, from his point of view by being given spiritual insight and understanding.” Colossians 1:9 [PHILLIPS]

We start by seeing things from His perspective. And just what is His perspective?

“And you yourselves, who were strangers to God, and, in fact, through the evil things you had done, his spiritual enemies, he has now reconciled through the death of his body on the cross, so that he might welcome you to his presence clean and pure, without blame or reproach.” Colossians 1:21-22 [PHILLIPS]

Yes, beloved child of God, for you who believe, you indeed were once unclean, but now Jesus has made you clean. Yes, you indeed were once His enemies, but now Jesus has reconciled you back to Himself and to God. Yes, you indeed were once filled with sin, but now you are without blame or reproach. And that is the most important thing you need to know about Jesus. That is the most important thing you need to know about your relationship with God. That is the most important thing you need to know about just how God sees you.

And this was not because God one day decided that He pitied us and so was willing to overlook our sins. This was not because God one day decided that He would no longer punish sin anymore. This was because Jesus, when He went to the cross,

“Surely He has borne our griefs (sicknesses, weaknesses, and distresses) and carried our sorrows and pains [of punishment], yet we [ignorantly] considered Him stricken, smitten, and afflicted by God [as if with leprosy].
But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our guilt and iniquities; the chastisement [needful to obtain] peace and well-being for us was upon Him, and with the stripes [that wounded] Him we are healed and made whole.” Isaiah 53:4-5 [AMPC]

Our sins were punished, but in the person of Jesus. Our consequences were paid for, but in the person of Jesus,

“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” 2 Corinthians 5:21

So “Do you not know that your body is the temple (the very sanctuary) of the Holy Spirit Who lives within you, Whom you have received [as a Gift] from God? You are not your own,
You were bought with a price [purchased with a preciousness and paid for, made His own].” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 [AMPC]

And do you know what God our Father did with you when He redeemed you by His Son’s sacrifice? He gave you back to you. That’s right, He gave you back your free will; so that you can choose to love Him and worship Him for what He has done for you… or not.

Have you never wondered why all creation has not become robots? Have you never wondered why God did not mandate that all creation bow down and worship now? After all, it is said,

“Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:9-11

So why isn’t it happening now? Is it because God doesn’t exist? Not at all. It is because He gave that choice back to you. That is the extent of our Father’s love for you.

It’s a bit like this. You buy a new doll for your little baby girl, and as she is playing with it, because she didn’t know her strength and in her excitement, she tugs a little bit too hard at the limbs and rips the doll in two. You see her cry, and not content with merely fixing up the old doll because you know that it is just not the same, you go buy another doll for her. And she rips it up again. How many times would you keep on replacing that doll for your daughter? That is not even nearly as many times our Father HAS replaced your messed up life with Jesus’ perfect one. And the best bit is, His love for you will make Him keep on righting your wrongs, and making you without blame or reproach.

And because you are always without blame and reproach, God is for you. He has no reason to be against you.

So “If God is for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31

“It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.” Romans 8:34

And that is why “Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:37-39

Do you think that our Father, after sacrificing His Son for you on the cross, would leave you to rot in your rut? Do you think that our Father, after sacrificing His Son for you on the cross, would abandon you in the midst of your problems? Do you think that our Father, after sacrificing His Son for you on the cross, would let you wallow in the mire of your wrongdoing and turn His face from you? Did He not say,

“For a mere moment I have forsaken you,
But with great mercies I will gather you.
With a little wrath I hid My face from you for a moment;
But with everlasting kindness I will have mercy on you,”
Says the Lord, your Redeemer.
“For this is like the waters of Noah to Me;
For as I have sworn
That the waters of Noah would no longer cover the earth,
So have I sworn
That I would not be angry with you, nor rebuke you.
For the mountains shall depart
And the hills be removed,
But My kindness shall not depart from you,
Nor shall My covenant of peace be removed,”
Says the Lord, who has mercy on you.” Isaiah 54:7-10

For a mere moment, He forsook Jesus, but because we are now in Him, our Father gathers us with great mercies. With a little wrath, He hid His face from Jesus, but because we are now in Him, our Father has mercy on us with everlasting kindness. Just as He has sworn that the waters will no longer cover the earth, so too shall He never be angry with you nor rebuke you, His kindness shall never depart from you nor His covenant of peace be removed from you.

And beloved, this is the truth that you need to know. This is the reality that you need to grasp. This is the mystery that has been revealed to you, and

“The mystery in a nutshell is just this: Christ is in you, so therefore you can look forward to sharing in God’s glory. It’s that simple.” Colossians 1:27 [MSG]

Beloved, hold on to this truth. And

“As you live this new life, we pray that you will be strengthened from God’s boundless resources, so that you will find yourselves able to pass through any experience and endure it with courage.” Colossians 1:11 [PHILLIPS]

Indeed, you are our Father’s loved and favored. Indeed, there is nothing that our Father holds against you. His bounty is fully and unreservedly made available to you.

For “He who did not spare His own son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him, also freely give us all things?” Romans 8:32

No matter what you are going through, what you know is important. Know the truth about just how much our Father loves you and you will realize that Jesus said it best when He said,

“…you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:32
