YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE

,
YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE

I am a football fan. Been behind one club all my life. The club has fallen from its glory days in the 80s and 90s and unashamedly, I dare say that right now, they are but a shadow of the team they used to be. Yet, before every home game, the entire stadium would break out in their anthem, You’ll Never Walk Alone. And I guess, despite the trials, that act of solidarity is perhaps one of the reasons why the club’s following has waned little despite their recent lack of success.

But beloved, do you know that this same feeling of comfort is also available for us? If you have ever been walking through the storm, though your dreams be tossed and blown, do you know that you can hold your head up high? Because you never walk alone.

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you.
When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned,
Nor shall the flame scorch you.” Isaiah 43:2

And why is this the case?

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by your name;
You are Mine.” Isaiah 43:1

For the simple reason that we are His. Isn’t it comforting to know that no matter how the situation looks right now, no matter what others are saying, the one unshakable truth and we should build our hopes on is the fact that we are His? It is little wonder then that David wrote these words.

“I’m feeling terrible—I couldn’t feel worse!
Get me on my feet again. You promised, remember?
When I told my story, you responded;
train me well in your deep wisdom.
Help me understand these things inside and out
so I can ponder your miracle-wonders.
My sad life’s dilapidated, a falling-down barn;
build me up again by your Word.
Barricade the road that goes Nowhere;
grace me with your clear revelation.
I choose the true road to Somewhere,
I post your road signs at every curve and corner.
I grasp and cling to whatever you tell me;
God, don’t let me down!
I’ll run the course you lay out for me
if you’ll just show me how.” Psalm 119:25-32 [MSG]

Ever felt terrible? Stumbled and fell? Wondered where God is in your situation? What on earth is He doing to let the situation deteriorate to this state? Is your life a dilapidated barn? Well, you never walk alone. Ask Him to show you how and run the course that He laid out for you.

People go to preachers and pastors for counsel when times get rough. And yes, we do all we can to help. But the truth is, we don’t have all the answers. In fact, I wager to say that for most of the time, we are as lost as you are. We don’t have a magical elixir. We don’t have a hat to pull the rabbit out of. And if we did, what we will pull is nothing more than the rabbit, not deliverance from your addictions, not the solution to your financial worries, not the healing for your loved ones. We can and we will stand with you and encourage you and pray with you but the power comes from Him.

“Remember what you said to me, your servant—
I hang on to these words for dear life!
These words hold me up in bad times;
yes, your promises rejuvenate me.
The insolent ridicule me without mercy,
but I don’t budge from your revelation.
I watch for your ancient landmark words,
and know I’m on the right track.
But when I see the wicked ignore your directions,
I’m beside myself with anger.
I set your instructions to music
and sing them as I walk this pilgrim way.
I meditate on your name all night, God,
treasuring your revelation, O God.
Still, I walk through a rain of derision
because I live by your Word and counsel.” Psalm 119: 49-56 [MSG]

So when troubles come, hang on to every word. When Satan assails, hang on to every word. Remember every promise written in Deuteronomy 28; remember the protection in Psalm 91; remember how your loving Father guides you in Psalm 23; remember that Jesus told you not to worry; remember Jesus told you that whatever you need, just ask; and remember that Jesus said,

“And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.” John 14:13-14

“Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.” Mark 11:24

And you will never feel alone, because you never are.

But you know what beloved, even and especially when troubles come and you feel dilapidated and depleted, ours is still a life of rest. For everything that we need our Father will supply.

“God, teach me lessons for living
so I can stay the course.
Give me insight so I can do what you tell me—
my whole life one long, obedient response.
Guide me down the road of your commandments;
I love traveling this freeway!
Give me a bent for your words of wisdom,
and not for piling up loot.
Divert my eyes from toys and trinkets,
invigorate me on the pilgrim way.
Affirm your promises to me—
promises made to all who fear you.
Deflect the harsh words of my critics—
but what you say is always so good.
See how hungry I am for your counsel;
preserve my life through your righteous ways!” Psalm 33:40 [MSG]

Have you run out of ideas? Our Father will give you the insight. Have you lost your way? Our Father will guide you along the way. Do you lack understanding? Ask our Father for wisdom. Is there some temptation that you are fighting in your life? Our Father will give you the strength to resist and the blinkers to ignore. Are there people who stand against you? Our Father will protect you. There is no eventuality that He cannot see. There is no circumstance that He is unprepared for. There is nothing that will catch Him unawares. So here’s a question for you. Why are you still trying to figure things out by yourself?

“You’re blessed when you stay on course,
walking steadily on the road revealed by God.
You’re blessed when you follow his directions,
doing your best to find him.
That’s right—you don’t go off on your own;
you walk straight along the road he set.
You, God, prescribed the right way to live;
now you expect us to live it.
Oh, that my steps might be steady,
keeping to the course you set;
Then I’d never have any regrets
in comparing my life with your counsel.
I thank you for speaking straight from your heart;
I learn the pattern of your righteous ways.
I’m going to do what you tell me to do;
don’t ever walk off and leave me.” Psalm 119:1-8 [MSG]

Indeed, David hit the nail on the head, he was right on the money. When you stay on His course, you will be nothing but blessed. Sure, trouble will come our way. But remember who you are travelling with and who is the one that guides you. Do you think that He will ever leave you?

“Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6

So don’t go off your merry way. Stay the course for soon enough you will see,

“Oh, how I love all you’ve revealed;
I reverently ponder it all the day long.
Your commands give me an edge on my enemies;
they never become obsolete.
I’ve even become smarter than my teachers
since I’ve pondered and absorbed your counsel.
I’ve become wiser than the wise old sages
simply by doing what you tell me.
I watch my step, avoiding the ditches and ruts of evil
so I can spend all my time keeping your Word.
I never make detours from the route you laid out;
you gave me such good directions.” Psalm 119:97-102 [MSG]

You always be ahead of those who persecute you, you will be wiser than those around you, you will avoid all the pitfalls in life and you will never be lost.

And through it all, yours will be a life of complete rest because our Father, as He guides, will put in place everything for you so that all you need to do is step into His blessings, protection and provision.

So walk on through the wind, walk on through the rain, walk on with hope in your heart, for you’ll never walk alone.
