YOU ARE INFECTIOUS

YOU ARE INFECTIOUS

Yes, beloved, you are infectious. Or at least you were called to be. Jesus said,

“You are the salt of the earth” Matthew 5:13

“You are the light of the world” Matthew 5:14

What does salt do? Salt enhances flavor. Salt brings out taste. Salt preserves. And if you have ever had a penchant for chips, you will no doubt realize that salt also makes food addictive, and it makes you keep on coming back for more.

And if we think about it, isn’t that the good and Godly life? Wherever we go, if we are able to bring out the best in others, enhance their flavor, preserve and enrich them, then point them to Jesus, the author and finisher of our work, will we not then make them come back for more?

Now then, light. What does light do? Light illuminates. Light enlightens. Light guides. Light casts out darkness and with it, the fear. You just need to switch on the light in the room to understand what I mean.

As we go about our daily lives, as we meet people, as we guide them along in the natural, will they not wonder just where is it that we get our wisdom, revelation and insight from? And when we point them to Jesus, The Light of the world, will their fears not be cast out and will they not keep coming back to Jesus for more?

So our job is simple. Be salt and be light to those whom He places on our paths and infect them with the love of Jesus. Only it is not that simple, is it?

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.” Matthew 5:13

That’s right beloved. You got to be salty. If you lose your saltiness, you are done for, finished, kaput. In fact, this is how The Amplified Bible presents it.

“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste (its strength, its quality), how can its saltness be restored? It is not good for anything any longer but to be thrown out and trodden underfoot by men.” Matthew 5:13 [AMPC]

You got to watch yourselves, beloved. Be careful that you do not lose your saltiness.

Wait. Hang on. How does salt lose its saltiness? Have you ever tried making salt lose its saltiness? Oh I know, you rinse it out with water. Right. Try it. The salt dissolves and infects the water so that now, tasteless water becomes salty. Oh wait, you leave it out in the sun to bake. Right. That was how salt was made in the first place. Sea water was left to dry off in the hot sun. So how do you make salt lose its saltiness? That’s right. You can’t.

You see, beloved, salt is a chemical compound. Its taste is its physical property. It was made that way, just like you. You were made perfect. You were made good, just as the Psalmist says.

“I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;” Psalm 139:14

You were also made for a purpose.

“Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” Genesis 1:26

All that happened between then and now is that you got a little dirty, like salt thrown on the floor, mixed with the dust and all. But if you spill salt on the floor, does it become less salty? Does it lose its saltiness? Of course not. It makes even the dust salty. And that beloved, is what we were created to do, to infect others with the love of Jesus. That is our physical property. That is just who we are. Remember beloved,

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10

So after Jesus gathered us from the dust and removed the dirt of sin from us through His death, we are now clean salt again, ready to be unleashed on the world to infect the world with God’s love. For do bear in mind that for us,

“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” 2 Corinthians 5:21

So you are salt. You are made to be salt. That is who you are. No amount of whatever the world tells you or tries to contaminate you with can ever change that fact.

Now what about light?

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-15

We need to watch ourselves, beloved. Be careful not to let the light of our lives be extinguished because we ran out of oil. Really? Does it say that? What does Jesus say about sustaining the burning fire? Do we need to do it ourselves? That’s right. It says nothing about topping up the oil. It just says that we are. So what do we have to do? Yes, just ‘be’. Be the light you were created to be.

Now, there is one thing that we need to do though, and that is to stop hiding. No lamp is put under a basket nor a lampstand hidden under the bed. So Jesus will never put you under a basket or under the bed. He will give you opportunities to shine. And when He does, please, for goodness sake, don’t run away and hide.

Beloved, you were made to be salt and light. You were made to infect and guide. That is who you are. But despite that, our Father does not send you out into the world unprepared. Before Jesus tells us our role in the world, He tells us this.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
For they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
For they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
For they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
For they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
For they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
For they shall be called sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake,
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Matthew 5:3-12

Even if you feel poor and empty inside, yours is already the kingdom of Heaven. Even if you feel like deep down you have died, Jesus is there to comfort you. Even if you feel timid, afraid of facing the big bad world, Jesus will see to it that you inherit the very things that once scared you. And if you are hungry, Jesus will feed you. If you are persecuted, Jesus will protect you. Even when they level all sorts of unfounded accusations against you, our Father is smiling at you. Indeed beloved,

“And God is able to make all grace (every favor and earthly blessing) come to you in abundance, so that you may always and under all circumstances and whatever the need be self-sufficient [possessing enough to require no aid or support and furnished in abundance for every good work and charitable donation].” 2 Corinthians 9:8 [AMPC]

So go out there and be infectious. Guide others to the love of Jesus for that is what you were created to do. That is your physical property. That is who you are. And while you are out there,

“…my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Jesus Christ.” Philippians 4:19
