Roller coasters are fascinating feats of modern engineering. Builders and designers are able to turn the laws of physics on its head and create an experience so thrilling and unique, it keeps fans coming back for more. Some rides give you a temporary sensation of weightlessness and some are built to disorientate you. But regardless of the formula, every ride is built upon two unshakable certainties; that you are firmly strapped in to the car that is secured by multiple fail-safes, and that the ride will come to a restful end with you perhaps shaken, but otherwise no worse for wear.

Life itself sometimes feels like a roller coaster, doesn’t it? We get brought to a high with success in an area of our lives, and then it all comes crashing down. Sometimes we feeling like we are on top of the world, and at other times, we feel like there is so much G-force pushing down on us, we can barely stand. And it all happens so quickly, we barely have time to catch our breaths. But you know what? When life takes us on a roller coaster ride, we who have our trust in Jesus can have every confidence that like the two unshakable certainties that we trust the engineers of the roller coaster with, those certainties are even more true for us. Let us see why.

“All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.” John 6:37-40

Here, Jesus tells us that there are three fail-safes that have been put in place for us whilst we are in the car, on life’s roller coaster ride; those who are called will answer, those who answer by accepting and believing in Jesus will always be accepted, those who accept will have everlasting life and never be lost.

Do you remember the time when you were called? What was it like? Was it a soft voice inside of you? Was it a friend who convinced you to give church a chance? Or was it a billboard that suddenly made you sit up and take notice? Perhaps it was not an immediate event, but rather a long drawn out process. Your family kept bugging you to go to church, or you kept stumbling upon the same evangelical page on the web. It might even have been something you heard from your Christian teacher when you were a child that suddenly, one day, out of the blue, caused the thoughts in your head to ‘click’. Whatever it was, it certainly was timely and effective because it certainly worked; and it worked because the circumstances were created especially for you; even though you may not understand why. That is just the beauty of our Father, for He says,

““For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord.
“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways,
And My thoughts than your thoughts.”” Isaiah 55:8-9

So we don’t need to understand, we just need to hold His hand.

Now, once we have accepted His call and believe that Jesus loves us so much that He was willing to take our place and die for our sins, His death has become to us of full effect, securing us even further because when we answered this call of Jesus,

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” Revelation 3:20

Each and every time He dines with us, He shows us just how He has purged us of our sins.

“Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.” Matthew 26:27-28

And so because we have now received full remission of all our sins, we have been made righteous before our Father,

“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” 2 Corinthians 5:21

So then that is why,

“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.” Romans 8:1

God has no more reason to be upset with us. God has no more reason to let us fly out of the roller coaster. Instead, He has every reason to keep us not only in there, but ensure that we are unharmed and fully provided for whilst we are in there.

For “He who did not spare His own son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him, also freely give us all things?” Romans 8:32

So that is why, despite the feelings of insecurity that life’s roller coaster gives us, despite the nausea that we might feel from time to time, regardless of how terrible or frightening the ride gets, we must always remember that this is our true reality.

“Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:37-39

While we are on life’s roller coaster, our Father is the anchor holding the car to the rails and Jesus is the harness holding us into the car, and between them, not one of us who are in the car will ever be lost.

And even though it seems like sometimes we are plunging into our own abyss, into life’s uncertainties that are sometimes terrifying to ponder; just like we know that even though we are plunging from the heights of the roller coaster, the momentum will catapult us right back up there again; so too can we have confidence that our Father’s love and protection will be a door of hope and expectation in that very valley, and it will open to us so much joy that we will be catapulted back up again, just as He said through Hosea.

“There I will give her her vineyards and make the Valley of Achor [troubling] to be for her a door of hope and expectation. And she shall sing there and respond as in the days of her youth and as at the time when she came up out of the land of Egypt.” Hosea 2:15 [AMPC]
And if the ride is getting too much for us, if life’s ups and downs are making us sick, just hang in there, because Jesus assures us of the second unshakable certainty – the ride will end.

“Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 3:16

When we know that beyond a shadow of doubt, Jesus and our Father are with us, we can have the confidence of David when He said,

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” Psalm 23:4

Because beloved, just like David, we are going through our valley of death. Even if wind and waves seem to buffet and threaten to overwhelm you, our Father has promised that

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
and the flame shall not consume you.” Isaiah 43:2 [ESV]

Yes, beloved, you are going Through. And not only are you coming out the other side, you are coming out unscathed, neither singed by the fire nor overwhelmed by the waters. For when Jesus, our Shepherd leads us,

“He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.
He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.” Psalm 23: 2-3

And in the end, we know that,

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord
Forever.” Psalm 23:6

So take another look at the problem that is facing you today. Is life tossing and tumbling you like a washing machine? Are you plunging from your heights faster than your mind can make sense of things? Are you disorientated and can’t tell which way is up? It’s alright, beloved. Jesus has got you firmly belted up and our Father is well anchored to the tracks. That is the reality of your situation. And though you may feel uneasy right now, they are guiding you to a place of rest, and just like roller coaster rides never last very long, your rest is coming soon.

Take heart beloved, all is certainly not lost. Just enjoy the love of Jesus and our Father while you are along for the ride.
