Some time back, we looked at how Jesus Says, “Be Still”. In that message, we looked at how in the face of our trials and troubles, instead of struggling and fighting, we really ought to be still and let our Father take control and deliver us from our situation, just like He did for Israel when they were standing at the Red Sea. Today, I’d like to dwell deeper into Psalm 46 and allow our Father to show us just why and how we are to be still, and what will happen when we do.

“Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!” Psalm 46:10

Our Father, apart from being all powerful and all knowing, is also a very jealous God. After Moses, in anger, broke the first set of tablets on which the Ten Commandments were written, our Father gave Him another set. This time, He added a warning,

“Take heed to yourself, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land where you are going, lest it be a snare in your midst. But you shall destroy their altars, break their sacred pillars, and cut down their wooden images (for you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God),” Exodus 34:12-14

Now we need to remember what happened the last time that got our Father and Moses hopping mad.

“Now when the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered together to Aaron, and said to him, “Come, make us gods that shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.”
And Aaron said to them, “Break off the golden earrings which are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.” So all the people broke off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them to Aaron. And he received the gold from their hand, and he fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made a molded calf.
Then they said, “This is your god, O Israel, that brought you out of the land of Egypt!”” Exodus 32:1-4

Wow, what a bunch of ingrates. These were the very people who saw the power and might of our Father and instead of patiently waiting to hear His will, they made for themselves a crafted figure and attributed to it all the miracles that our Father performed to bring them out of Egypt. No wonder our Father was upset. I mean think about it; you slog it out for your children. You scrimp and save just so that you can provide the best for them. You sacrifice your comforts just so that they can be comfortable. Then one day, they said that it is their favorite uncle that they love most because he is the one that bought them all their toys. How would you feel? So can you imagine how our Father felt? But it is worse for Him because it was not an uncle that Israel loved. It was their ‘teddy bear’, the very one which our Father gave them to begin with, that they said rescued them from bondage in Egypt. How big an insult is that?

So our Father has every right to be jealous over your love because not only is He the one who gave you everything you have right now, and who is going to give you everything that you will ever have in the future; there is just no other God except Him. For He says,

“I am the Lord, and there is no other;
There is no God besides Me.” Isaiah 45:5

“Before Me there was no God formed,
Nor shall there be after Me.
I, even I, am the Lord,
And besides Me there is no savior.” Isaiah 43:10-11

But what you also need to realize beloved, is that our Father is jealous because you are our Father’s ‘mantel piece’ which our Father puts on display to show off His power, His might and most of all, His love for you. That is why He says,

“Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!” Psalm 46:10

How will others know to exalt Him, if not for the work done in you?

“Come, behold the works of the Lord,
Who has made desolations in the earth.
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two;
He burns the chariot in the fire.” Psalm 46:8-9

When He makes wars cease around you, breaks your enemies’ bows and cuts their spears in two, when He burns their chariots in the fire, then will the world see that He is God and He will be exalted among the nations, exalted in the earth.

Beloved, you think that as a child of God, you have but a vested interest in the kingdom of Heaven? Well, our Father is telling you that He has complete interest in your well-being, your prosperity, your success, your future, because through His work in your life, He gets to show off. This is why we can be still. Because He wants you to succeed even more than you do.

So how do we be still?

“God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear,” Psalm 46:1-2

No Fear. Now, talk is cheap, because in this case, fear is an involuntary response. Well, yes. You are right. So let us read on.

“There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God,
The holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High.
God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved;
God shall help her, just at the break of dawn.” Psalm 46:4-5

Remember what our Father said to the Samaritan woman?

“Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”” John 4:13-14

Jesus is our fountain of water springing up into everlasting life inside of us. So when His stream of joy, peace, health and wealth; His stream of eternal abundant life is flowing inside of us, we can be like the tree planted by the stream.

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,
And whose hope is the Lord.
For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters,
Which spreads out its roots by the river,
And will not fear when heat comes;
But its leaf will be green,
And will not be anxious in the year of drought,
Nor will cease from yielding fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8

Because our Father will help us, just at the break of dawn.

So how do we be still? How does a tree grow? It just stands there. Do the rains beat against it? Yes. Do the winds billow and buffet? Yes. But does it fall? No. Why? Because,

“God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved;
God shall help her, just at the break of dawn.” Psalm 46:5

Just as you are waking up, our Father is there to help you. That is why we can be still, we can be worry free, and just rest in the confidence that right from the Sun’s rise, He is there.

So how shall we know that we are being helped?

“I will go before you
And make the crooked places straight;
I will break in pieces the gates of bronze
And cut the bars of iron.” Isaiah 45:2

Options you thought too difficult for you to manage will suddenly become easy. Problems that once kept you up all night will suddenly provide for themselves the solution. Doors that once were closed to you will be opened. Opportunities that once were too remote for you to even consider will become a viable reality. And bondages, strongholds that once held you in guilt and condemnation will be broken.

“I will give you the treasures of darkness
And hidden riches of secret places,” Isaiah 45:3

Provision will flow. Promotions will occur. Raises will be given. And you will find provision even from the most unlikely of places; places you never knew existed.

“The labor of Egypt and merchandise of Cush
And of the Sabeans, men of stature,
Shall come over to you, and they shall be yours;
They shall walk behind you,
They shall come over in chains;
And they shall bow down to you.
They will make supplication to you, saying, ‘Surely God is in you,
And there is no other;
There is no other God.’” Isaiah 45:14

Wise men will consult you. Leaders of industry will look to you for guidance. They will follow every advice and hang on your every word. And by this you shall know that our Father is with you and for you.

And why would He do that? So that the entire world will look at you and know that He is God.

Beloved, you are our Father’s mantel piece. Mantel pieces do not have to work or strive. They just have to sit there and look pretty; and they can because they were beautifully made. So it is for you, just as the Psalmist realized;

“I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;” Psalm 139:14

Beloved, I can end with no words more beautiful than our Father’s declaration to you.

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by your name;
You are Mine.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you.
When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned,
Nor shall the flame scorch you.
For I am the Lord your God,
The Holy One of Israel, your Savior;” Isaiah 43:1-3

My friend, if you have never known the awesome power that is our Father, and more importantly, if you have never experienced His love for you; and if you have just experienced His calling and now want to come under His power and protection; my friend, you can. For the only lament that our Father has is,

“But you have not called upon Me, O Jacob;
And you have been weary of Me, O Israel.” Isaiah 43:22-23

So if you would call on Him and accept His love for you, then say this to Him right now.

“Father, thank You for loving me so much, You have made me Your mantel piece. Thank You that while I was a sinner, You sent Jesus to die on the cross for my sins. So that this mantel piece, once covered with the filth of sin, could be washed clean by Jesus’ blood, restored to a new life by His rising and placed on Your mantel for all the world to see. Father I consent to be loved. I consent to be treasured. I consent to be Your mantel piece through which Your love and power can be displayed for all the world to see. Father I will be still and allow You to work in my life so that You will be exalted in Heaven and on earth and under the earth through Your work in me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Beloved, child of God, our Father has said,

““For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord.
“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways,
And My thoughts than your thoughts.”” Isaiah 55:8-9

Never mind if you do not understand what is happening right now in your life because our Father is in control. Mantel pieces do not need to know. They just need to show.
