There is a scene is Disney’s recent rendition of Cinderella where the evil stepmother said to Cinderella, just as she was about to leave for the ball, “Mark my words, you shall not go to the ball.”

Then, predictably, Cinderella meets her fairy Godmother and she, amidst turning lizards into footmen, a pumpkin into a coach, a goose into a driver, said to Cinderella, “You shall go to the ball.”

Life is like that sometimes, is it not? It seems the world is conspiring to keep you from the ball, from that next promotion, from that next big break. And sometimes, it is. But before you go running off all paranoid about everyone and everything in this world, and believing in conspiracy theories that they are all out to get you, whoever they are, know that it is really only one person trying to keep you from one thing, Satan trying to keep you from experiencing God’s love; just like he did to Joshua and Job.

“Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the Angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to oppose him.” Zechariah 3:1

And separately,

“Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil?”
So Satan answered the Lord and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing? Have You not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. But now, stretch out Your hand and touch all that he has, and he will surely curse You to Your face!”
And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand on his person.”
So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.” Job 1:8-12

Satan’s passion in life, as it seems, is to keep us from God. To make our Father look bad so that we will think bad of Him and not run to Him and experience His love. And how does He do that? He opposes us. He doubts us, and makes us doubt ourselves. In fact, The Amplified calls Satan our adversary who accuses us.

“Then [the guiding angel] showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the Angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at Joshua’s right hand to be his adversary and to accuse him.” Zechariah 3:1 [AMPC]

Yes, Satan is the quintessential evil step-mother. Only that he is not our mother, not even closely related to us in any way, but he is evil.

But you know what? We can take comfort that our Father, who is infinitely more powerful that Satan is, to whom even Satan has to bow the knee, never did doubt us, even when we fall, and loves us unconditionally and will do all in His power to make sure that we get to the ball, get that promotion, step into His blessings, as long as we want to. It is just like what happened to Joseph.

“Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age. Also he made him a tunic of many colors. But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peaceably to him.
Now Joseph had a dream, and he told it to his brothers; and they hated him even more. So he said to them, “Please hear this dream which I have dreamed: There we were, binding sheaves in the field. Then behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and indeed your sheaves stood all around and bowed down to my sheaf.”
And his brothers said to him, “Shall you indeed reign over us? Or shall you indeed have dominion over us?” So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.
Then he dreamed still another dream and told it to his brothers, and said, “Look, I have dreamed another dream. And this time, the sun, the moon, and the eleven stars bowed down to me.”
So he told it to his father and his brothers; and his father rebuked him and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall your mother and I and your brothers indeed come to bow down to the earth before you?” And his brothers envied him, but his father kept the matter in mind.” Genesis 37:3-11

Joseph was blessed, Joseph was favored, more than all his brothers, we are told. And as if that was not enough cause for jealousy, he had, not once, but twice, dreamed that his entire family would bow before him. Talk about rubbing it in. It got so bad that we are told that even though his father loved him so much, he still kept the matter in mind.

And we know what happened after that.

“Now when they saw him afar off, even before he came near them, they conspired against him to kill him. Then they said to one another, “Look, this dreamer is coming! Come therefore, let us now kill him and cast him into some pit; and we shall say, ‘Some wild beast has devoured him.’ We shall see what will become of his dreams!” Genesis 37:18-20

That happened to you before? Sold out by your best mates, whom you trusted, just because the boss thought highly of you? Yes, that is when Satan is standing there opposing you, accusing you. But just like our Father rebuked Satan for accusing Joshua,

“And the Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, Satan! The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?”” Zechariah 3:2

Our Father rebukes Satan when he dares to accuse us and makes sure that we are well taken care of, just like Joseph.

“The Lord was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. And his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord made all he did to prosper in his hand. So Joseph found favor in his sight, and served him. Then he made him overseer of his house, and all that he had he put under his authority. So it was, from the time that he had made him overseer of his house and all that he had, that the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the Lord was on all that he had in the house and in the field. Thus he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand, and he did not know what he had except for the bread which he ate.” Genesis 39:2-6

When our Father blesses you and favors you, all around, even those who do not believe, will be able to see it. That is the true meaning of the Greek word ‘makarios’, which is used in the New Testament to denote ‘blessings’ and ‘blessed’. It is an adjective which describes a person who is in an enviable position because others can see the favor of God on that person. That is what Potiphar saw, and that is what others will see when our Father blesses and favors you. And how will others see that? Well, notice how it is recorded for us that Potiphar, even though he did not believe God, was blessed in his household? But why? Because of God? No. For Joseph’s sake. So you will not only bring blessings on yourself, but also on all those around, so that all may see that you are in an enviable position, receiving the favor of our Father.

And in the end, we know that this happened to Joseph.

“So the advice was good in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of all his servants. And Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find such a one as this, a man in whom is the Spirit of God?”
Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Inasmuch as God has shown you all this, there is no one as discerning and wise as you. You shall be over my house, and all my people shall be ruled according to your word; only in regard to the throne will I be greater than you.” And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.”” Genesis 41:37-41

Joseph ended up in the ball now, didn’t he? He was now Master of all that Pharaoh possessed. And in the end, as he told his brothers,

“But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.” Genesis 50:20

Beloved, that is exactly what Jesus will do for you, if you will let Him. All the evil that Satan can muster to keep you from experiencing our Father’s love, our Father will use and turn into opportunities where His love is amplified and His blessings multiplied in our lives. Don’t lose heart when the world tells you that you will not go to the ball. Jesus will make sure you get to the ball not only on time, but decked out in the finest that Heaven has to offer. So let Him.
