This is a common question that is asked not only by Christians, but by just about anyone who believes that there is a God. Even for some atheists, who believe in the existence of a higher power, they too find themselves asking this question when things get rough, and they get mixed signals. But beloved child of God, Jesus wants to settle that doubt once and for all. He wants to impart discernment so that you will know beyond a shadow of a doubt, if what you are experiencing is or is not from our Father. Let us begin with what is.

“And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the Lord your God:
Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the country.
Blessed shall be the fruit of your body, the produce of your ground and the increase of your herds; the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flocks.
Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl.
Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out.
The Lord will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before your face; they shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways.
The Lord will command the blessing on you in your storehouses and in all to which you set your hand, and He will bless you in the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
The Lord will establish you as a holy people to Himself, just as He has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of the Lord your God and walk in His ways.
Then all the peoples of the earth shall see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and they shall be afraid of you.
And the Lord will grant you plenty of goods, in the fruit of your body, in the increase of your livestock, and in the produce of your ground, in the land of which the Lord swore to your fathers to give you.
The Lord will open to you His good treasure, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season, and to bless all the work of your hand.
You shall lend to many nations and not borrow.
And the Lord will make you the head and not the tail; you shall be above only, and not beneath, if you heed the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, and are careful to observe them.” Deuteronomy 28:1-13

Beloved child of God, you who believe in the Father and believe on Jesus are already obeying the voice of God for Jesus has said,

“Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”” John 6:29

And because you believe, you qualify for everything stated above. Yes, everything. So are you receiving favor at work; favor in the home; prosperity in your spirit and finances; protection from evil; increase in every good area of your life? Well then, our Father tells us clearly that it is from Him.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declared the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 [NIV]

And the next sure sign that it is from our Father is this,

“And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.” John 14:13-14

If it brings glory to Jesus and to the Father, if it makes those around you say, “What a wonderful God you have!” Then it is most definitely from the Father because it brings him joy to give you. For Jesus said again,

“If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.” John 15:7-8

Our Father is glorified when we bear much fruit, when we prosper. And just in case you are thinking that Jesus was referring to another Father,

“Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’” John 20:17

Indeed, we should have such confidence in these words that it would lead us to echo the words of the apostle Paul,

“And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Jesus Christ.” Philippians 4:19

Yes, the ultimate show of confidence in Him, and consequently delight to Him because it shows just how much we believe in Him is to say to those around that MY God shall supply all YOUR needs. We can only be this magnanimous if we ourselves have been provided for. Else we would be too caught up in our own provision to even think for others, let alone bless them. So in the same measure that it was given to Paul, so shall it be given unto us, and more, Amen.

Now, what is not from God?

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” John 3:16-17
Firstly, if it, whatever it is, makes you wonder about your salvation, it is not from Him. If it makes you think that you can lose your salvation, it is not from Him. For Jesus tells us clearly that He came to save, not to condemn.

Next, if it makes you feel condemned, it is not from Him. If it makes you feel dirty, it is not from Him. For even to the woman caught in adultery Jesus said,

“When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?”
She said, “No one, Lord.”
And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.” John 8:10-11

So if it makes you feel condemned, it is not from God.

Next, if it makes you feel that God is angry with you, it is not from God. For our Father has said,

“For this is like the waters of Noah to Me;
For as I have sworn
That the waters of Noah would no longer cover the earth,
So have I sworn
That I would not be angry with you, nor rebuke you.” Isaiah 54:9

“Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” Hebrews 10:17

Even the Psalmist has said,

“He has not dealt with us according to our sins,
Nor punished us according to our iniquities.
For as the heavens are high above the earth,
So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him;
As far as the east is from the west,
So far has He removed our transgressions from us.” Psalm 103:10-12

So anything that makes you feel that God is angry with you, makes you feel condemned, makes you feel dirty, they are all not from God. Because you, beloved child of the Most High God, have been made clean by Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross.

But take heart beloved, because when bad things come, our Father has said,

“No weapon formed against you shall prosper,
And every tongue which rises against you in judgment
You shall condemn.
This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord,
And their righteousness is from Me,”
Says the Lord.” Isaiah 54:17

“I will bless those who bless you,
And I will curse him who curses you;
And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” Genesis 12:3

So even when bad things come, we can be sure of His protection over us.

In truth, it is really very easy to discern if things are of Him. When we truly understand that He is our loving Father and our maker, we will know that all things that would come from a father, are things that would come from Him. For Jesus said,

“If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” Matthew 7:11

If things are looking bleak now, just they did for Israel when they just came out from Egypt, know that your Father loves you and is always there, taking care of you. That is the quality of The Father, our Father. It does not matter if your own father was or was not good to you, you heavenly Father is the best Father you could ever need.

And if by chance you have not made Jesus your Lord and Savior, and you have not made His Father, your Father, and would like to right now, then say this prayer with me,

“Father, I come before you and acknowledge you as my Father, creator of heaven and earth and all that is within it, and Him who created me. Thank You for the gift of salvation that Jesus came to bring. That whilst I was still a sinner, Jesus died for me, that by His death, I too have died to sin, and by His resurrection, I too am resurrected in Him and sit at Your right hand. Thank You that all this was made possible by the shedding of His blood, which gave me full remission of all my sins, past present and future. Father, thank You for opening my eyes to Your love and affection. Thank You for showing me who You really are and what is truly of You. May my days be constantly filled with an increasing revelation of Your love for me. In Jesus' name, Amen.”

Beloved, discern well. All good things come from Him who loves you.
