IN JESUS WE HAVE POWER OF ATTORNEY

,

In most societies, the power of attorney over one’s life and estate are automatically assigned to the spouse and immediate family. There is something special about the parent-child, husband-wife relationship; and society acknowledges that by giving all parties in those relationships full rights and power to make decisions for one another.

But as Uncle Ben said in Spiderman, “with great power comes great responsibility”. And for those of us who have been entrusted with the full care of a loved one, we know how heavy a responsibility that is.

In the same way, beloved child of God, Jesus wants you to know that in Him, and through Him, we share power of attorney with Him and with God our Father, making them responsible for our care and giving us the right to inherit all the blessings of Heaven.

This power of attorney stems from the two relationships we have with Jesus and with God our Father. This is because we are both the bride of Christ and children of God.

We who believe are part of the church, and the church is the bride of Christ.

“Do not fear, for you will not be ashamed;
Neither be disgraced, for you will not be put to shame;
For you will forget the shame of your youth,
And will not remember the reproach of your widowhood anymore.
For your Maker is your husband,
The Lord of hosts is His name;
And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel;
He is called the God of the whole earth.” Isaiah 54:4-5

Indeed beloved, for us who believe, our Maker, Jesus, who was with our Father during creation, is our husband.

“When He assigned to the sea its limit,
So that the waters would not transgress His command,
When He marked out the foundations of the earth,
Then I was beside Him as a master craftsman;
And I was daily His delight,
Rejoicing always before Him,
Rejoicing in His inhabited world,
And my delight was with the sons of man.” Proverbs 8:29-31

Jesus was there beside God our Father during our creation, and we were His delight. So since, all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death; because Christ was raised from the dead, by the glory of the Father, we too now walk in newness of life. For, if we have been united with Him in a death like His, we shall certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like His (Romans 6:3-5). And because now we who believe are united with Him, we have a double guarantee of right standing with God because Jesus was also daily God’s delight.

Therefore, this right standing with God our Father and the power of attorney as the bride of Christ, gives us the right to His care.

“For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.” Ephesians 5:23

The first thing we gain access to is His redeeming salvation. Because Jesus died for us, we died with Him and in Him, to sin. And because Jesus rose again from the dead, we rise with Him and in Him to a newness of life. And His shed blood gives us full remission from sin.

“Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.” Matthew 26:27-28

Therefore the next thing that we receive from Jesus is complete sanctification and restoration to our original state, the state which God purposed for us, because we were made in the image of God.

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.” Ephesians 5:25-27

So now, we are holy, we are without blemish. But not because of what we did, but because of what Jesus did. For when the disciples asked Jesus who could be saved, He told them this,

“With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Matthew 19:26

And in the last day, when we are with Him, this shall be said of us,

“Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.” And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.” Revelation 19:7-8

Indeed, we will be made ready for His coming for Jesus Himself tells us,

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.” John 14:1-3

And when we comes, we will be clothed in fine linen of righteousness, because we who believe in Him, have a double claim to His righteousness for firstly,

“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” 2 Corinthians 5:21

And secondly, since it was said of Abraham,

“And he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness.” Genesis 15:6

We who believe will also have it accounted to us for righteousness. So what righteous act, what righteous deed do we have to perform? Jesus Himself tells us,

“This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.” John 6:29

And more than being the bride of Christ, we are also children of God, for Jesus tells us,

“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” John 1:12-13

And just as any father would give his child good things, Jesus tells us of God our Father,

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” Matthew 7:7-11

But our blessings are not just for the here and now, there is also a greater inheritance waiting for us, a perfect, incorruptible inheritance that will not be eaten away by the locusts. For the apostle Peter tells us,

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” 1 Peter 1:3-5

So beloved, you have been joined with God our Father, in and through Jesus. And this relationship gives you power of attorney over His riches in glory and gives Him the responsibility of taking care of you. You were; and because He loved you so much He died for you so that through His resurrection, you can be with Him; you are and always will be Jesus’ delight. That therefore also makes you, who are in Jesus, God’s delight because Jesus is daily our Father’s delight. Live in the consciousness of His love for you and realize the awesome power that has been put into your hands.
