JESUS SAYS, “SPEAK, AND IT SHALL BE DONE FOR YOU.”

,

Speech is indeed a gift that is given only to man. In all of God’s creation, none else possess such a complex form of communication. And truly, this gift of God holds incredible power. For the author of Proverbs says,

“The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters;
The wellspring of wisdom is a flowing brook.” Proverbs 18:4

“A fool’s lips enter into contention,
And his mouth calls for blows.
A fool’s mouth is his destruction,
And his lips are the snare of his soul.
The words of a talebearer are like tasty trifles,
And they go down into the inmost body.” Proverbs 18:6-8

“A man’s stomach shall be satisfied from the fruit of his mouth;
From the produce of his lips he shall be filled.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
And those who love it will eat its fruit.” Proverbs 18:20-21

But my friend, Jesus does not want to leave you feeling afraid or apprehensive of this wonderful gift that He has given you. Instead, He wants to show you that through the tongue, you can open the doors to untold blessings, His untold blessings that He so deeply desires for you.

The founding premise is this promise which Jesus Himself gives.

“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these will he do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.” John 14:12-14

What a blessed privilege Jesus gives to us, His beloved. And throughout the Bible, He shows us how we might use this gift of speech to ask.

“Now in the morning, as He returned to the city, He was hungry. And seeing a fig tree by the road, He came to it and found nothing on it but leaves, and said to it, “Let no fruit grow on you ever again.” Immediately the fig tree withered away.
And when the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, “How did the fig tree wither away so soon?”
So Jesus answered and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ it will be done. And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.” Matthew 21:20-22

In this episode, not only does Jesus give us the perfect demonstration, He also unlocks the secrets to speaking blessings and providence into our lives.

The first condition is that we have faith and do not doubt. Quite honestly, the ‘and’ is lexically redundant because having faith means not doubting. But it syntactically emphasizes the attitude which we are to have when we make our requests to our Father.

Beloved child of God, your Father is not stingy. He wants to give, for Jesus has said that we can ask anything. And there is nothing that we could conceivably want that He cannot provide for,

“Indeed heaven and the highest heavens belong to the Lord your God, also the earth with all that is in it.” Deuteronomy 10:14

“The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness,
The world and those who dwell therein.” Psalm 24:1

The apostle Mark records this same teaching as,

“So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God.” Mark 11:22

So ask with faith and a positive expectation of good, a positive expectation of God.

Next, we must speak. Jesus’ next instruction to the disciples is to speak to the problem. For He says also,

“For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.” Mark 11:23

Here Jesus unveils the power of speech. Remember that God gave us free will. He will never force anything upon us. So if we want something, we needs ask for it. And once we ask, we shall receive.

This has always been God’s way. In the desert, when Israel has run out of water,

“Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Take the rod; you and your brother Aaron gather the congregation together. Speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will yield its water; thus you shall bring water for them out of the rock, and give drink to the congregation and their animals.” Numbers 20:7-8

Again notice how all Moses had to do was speak? But notice what happens next.

“And Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock; and he said to them, “Hear now, you rebels! Must we bring water for you out of this rock?” Then Moses lifted his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod; and water came out abundantly, and the congregation and their animals drank.
Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not believe Me, to hallow Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.” Numbers 20:10-12

Wow, Moses must have had been having a bad day in the office.

Now, we need to understand that the direct consequence meted out by God was the result of Israel declaring that they can and will do everything that the Lord commands.

“Then all the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do.” Exodus 19:8

“All the people spoke at the same time and said, “We will obey everything the Lord says.” Exodus 19:8[GW]

And in so doing, they rejected God’s free gift of blessings and made everything that they got, a direct result of their own actions.

But for us, this direct dispensation of consequence when we are disobedient is no longer applicable for God Himself has said,

“Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” Hebrews 10:17

But we can still learn from this episode that God is displeased when we do anything else but speak to our problems. In fact, He considers it as a sign that we do not believe Him, the great Almighty. In the same way that we, as parents, get hurt when our children do not believe that we are going to give them good things, our Father is hurt when we do not believe.

So then, let us instead learn from the example that Jesus left for us for He says that,

“Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.” Mark 11:24

Ask + Believe = Receive

Beloved child of God, let us ask our Father today. Let us speak life, healing, recovery and restoration into our lives and situations and let us believe that because Jesus has guaranteed it, so shall it be in our lives.
