A good way to exponentially increase the effectiveness of ant poison is to mix the poison with honey. No other bait works quite as well. And before long, the colonies of ants that are drawn to it die off right next to that which they craved.

In many ways, the distractions of the world are like that ant trap. Be they man’s praise or luxuries, these sources of honey can sometimes prove to be traps for us, drawing us away from the true source of pure unadulterated sweetness.

“For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple.” Romans 16:18

“The words of a talebearer are like tasty trifles,
And they go down into the inmost body.” Proverbs 18:8

Indeed, what we choose to fill ourselves with, do go down into the inmost body and that will most certainly change us, our character, our being into that which we have consumed. So beloved child of God, choose wisely, choose Jesus.

The Bible tells us that our Father is not a kill joy. In fact, He wants us to have the sweetness not just of the heavenly realm; He also wants us to have the sweetness of the earth. For just as our Father told Israel, His words are true for us today.

“I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows. So I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites.” Exodus 3:7-8

Yes, our Father knows what we are going through and He wants for us to be in a land flowing with milk and honey. In fact, our Father says through David,

“Oh, that My people would listen to Me,
That Israel would walk in My ways!
I would soon subdue their enemies,
And turn My hand against their adversaries.
The haters of the Lord would pretend submission to Him,
But their fate would endure forever.
He would have fed them also with the finest of wheat;
And with honey from the rock I would have satisfied you.” Psalm 81:13-16

If indeed we walk in His ways, He would subdue our enemies and feed us with wheat and honey. But herein also lies our biggest obstacle to receiving from our Father.

We have a difficult time walking in His ways. Not that His ways are difficult. But the world has made us think that our Father is a killjoy. But this could not be further from the truth. The psalmist says, after much meditation,

“The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul;
The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;
The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart;
The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes;
The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever;
The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.
More to be desired are they than gold,
Yea, than much fine gold;
Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.
Moreover by them Your servant is warned,
And in keeping them there is great reward.” Psalm 19:7-11

The laws of the Lord make us good from the inside out when the laws of the world only make us good on the outside. The laws of the Lord bring us joy and give us much wisdom. The laws of the Lord are more valuable than gold. And yes, the laws of the Lord are sweeter than honey; and it rewards us much, even intrinsically, to keep them.

Such is the beauty of our Father’s ways that it endures forever for even after 100 psalms, the psalmist still comes back and says,

“Oh, how I love Your law!
It is my meditation all the day.
You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies;
For they are ever with me.
I have more understanding than all my teachers,
For Your testimonies are my meditation.
I understand more than the ancients,
Because I keep Your precepts.
I have restrained my feet from every evil way,
That I may keep Your word.
I have not departed from Your judgments,
For You Yourself have taught me.
How sweet are Your words to my taste,
Sweeter than honey to my mouth!
Through Your precepts I get understanding;
Therefore I hate every false way.” Psalm 119:97-104

This time, the psalmist adds the fruit of discernment to the list of fruits that keeping in the ways of our Father produces.

In many ways, our Father wanting us to keep His ways is very much like we wanting our children to heed our advice. Be it because we have been there, done that, and know better, or because we have studied and so know better; it pains us when our children get themselves into avoidable trouble when they forsake our advice.

Beloved child of God, our Father is not only all knowing and the maker of the universe, Jesus also came down and was tempted in every way for it is written,

“For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.” Hebrews 4:15

So when our Father gives us instruction, not only does He do so in full knowledge, He does so with full experience. What folly it would be not to heed His instruction.

Beloved, there are indeed many distractions, many sources of honey in this world. And we will be drawn to honey whether we like it or not. For it is written,

“A satisfied soul loathes the honeycomb,
But to a hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.” Proverbs 27:7

So we needs be extra careful when we choose our source of honey. Let us heed the psalmist call and come to Jesus,

“Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good;
Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!” Psalm 34:8

Let us trust in Jesus to bring us into the land of milk and honey and trust Him to feed us with fine wheat and honey. Let us choose wisely, let us choose Jesus.
